merchant of venice

stage design for venice street/garden scenes
as you can see the boat (where the chorus will be) + town background + water are on the left, this feature will not be changed at all throughout the different scenes.
on the right should be the benches, fountain and statues (which as you will see i thought best not to move in the other scenes, as carrying around furniture between scenes is not easy, therefore i thought it would be good to keep furniture/prop change down to a minimum.

below is the shylock's house scenery.
I am still not sure if we should have the scenery for shylock's house at all as the time characters actually spend time in it delivering their lines is relatively short. however, i hope you can see that the only thing changed fron the venice scene is the sitting furniture, and of course the background wallpaper on the right back of the stage.
i thought that this should be the only bit of background that changes (the back right of stage with the arches) throughout the scenes, because in real life sliding a panel of background is much easier than changing the whole stage.

below is the portia's pad stage scene.
it's quite fancy, but i didn't want to overdo it as getting in more props would only complicate things when the furniture/props are being changed over quickly between the stage set changes.
hope you like the caskets and the posh sofa!

this is the court stage scene.
again, i'm re-using furniture from previous scenes thus trying to realistically cut down on the prop cost, and of course the effort in changing different furniture around.
before i forget, i want to point out the right hand of the stage with the stained glass window. this bit signifies the inside of a house (adds depth to scenery) and more importantly provides a wider passage-way for stagehands to move around furniture. also, it can serve as a little hide-out for the characters, where or if necessary.

the only other things to point out are...
1: the pinkish tree, which i used as the green one wouldn't let me put it right there (the game has limitations as to placement of trees and such).
2: the two sticks on the corners of the front of the stage are in fact fire torches (i thought this would add atmosphere).
3: the yellowy thing in the corner is actually a square stone plant pot type thing, again stage decoration.
4: the mass of dodgy looking metal chairs in front of the stage is just the inside of the theatre and the the seating. if you think i should change the chairs then let me know.
5: you may notice an extra wall behind the stage, with wooden panneling running along the back of the stage and right of the wings side. this is so that when looking through the arches the audience doesn't see the filthy back of the stage :)
right i think i said most things, please let me know what you think and about changes or wishes you might have about the set. it took me forever to make that boat! hehe... speak soon, Lana.
